Rural Court Advocate

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Assist clients in understanding their legal rights. Assist clients navigating the legal system. Advocate for clients and for the agency with community partners, including law enforcement, the judiciary, sister agencies, and so on. Work closely with other direct service staff to ensure the program provides excellent and consistent services.

· Be a champion for the agency, the clients and the staff at all times

· Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures

· Attend all meetings and complete all forms and reports required by direct supervisor, funders, Executive Director or the Board

· Provide legal advocacy and assistance to victims of domestic violence; accompany clients to hearings for support and advocacy as appropriate

· Engage in coordination and advocacy with officials and agencies in the criminal justice system

· Provide education and professional training on legal issues of domestic violence

· Remain abreast of current domestic violence laws

· Document all client meetings and groups; maintain client files to meet agency and funder requirements

· Make client referrals and network with appropriate agencies

· Engage in activities to increase public awareness and education related to the issues of domestic violence and homelessness

· Rantoul and Ford County travel is required.

· Other duties as assigned

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

Minimum of two years of experience in social services. Experience providing advocacy and supportive services for victims of domestic violence. Experience with case management. Strong oral and written communication skills. Strong debate skills.

· Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to effectively communicate with clients, staff, and community partners

· Excellent organizational and leadership skills

· Computer proficiency (MS Office – Word, Excel and Outlook)

· Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines, while maintaining a positive attitude and providing exemplary service

· Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices

· Bachelor’s degree preferred

Physical Requirements:

· Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards

· Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, and agency policies

· Must be able to lift and carry up to 30 lbs

· Must be able to talk, listen and speak clearly on telephone

Job Type: Full-time

Salary: $15.00 to $16.00 /week

· Provide supportive services on a weekly basis, or more often as needed, to clients in the form of advocacy, counseling, life-skill building, education, etc.

· Facilitate children’s educational/support groups and parenting education

· Responsible for the oversight and upkeep of children’s play and support areas

· Make client referrals and network with appropriate agencies

· Engage in activities to increase public awareness and education related to the issues of domestic violence and homelessness
